Save Our Baboons! 120 Baboons are Condemned to Death

Fighting To Save The Lives of 120 Baboons!

Following a press release from the Cape Peninsula authorities (City of Cape Town, TMNP, SANParks and Cape Nature) collectively known as the Joint Task Team (JTT) – we are distressed to note their intention to remove 5 troops of baboons.

The following is quoted from the JTT Press Statement 29th of May 2025:
“It is proposed that five splinter troops be removed from the Cape Peninsula as these troops have limited access to low-lying natural land with plants of high nutritional value for foraging; the low-lying areas are too small to sustain them; rangers have very little success in keeping the baboons out of the urban areas leading to an over-reliance on aversion techniques; the health and welfare of the troops are severely compromised; and escalating conflict between baboons and residents is being recorded.”

Baboon Matters has vigorously opposed this plan and have had many insightful articles published on our social media platforms as well as interviews on local radio, international media, podcasts and in hard copy press where we note the importance of the implementation of mitigation strategies. Our concerns are widely shared by our colleauges, all baboon groups and animal welfare groups.

Now more than ever we encourage you all to keep following our Facebook page for all up-to-date information as we desperately fight to save these baboon troops.

JOIN US AS WE MARCH TO PROTEST!
Baboon Matters has partnered with Beauty Without Cruelty-SA to host a peaceful demonstration to object to lethal management and we are calling for mitigation strategies to be implemented.

We hope that everybody who loves and supports baboons will walk with us on the 19th of July as we hand over a memorandum of concerns to the JTT.
