CGTN Africa caught up with Baboon Matters at Rooi-Els(Western Cape), when we visited the Overstrand area to check on the baboons after the recent devastating fires.
It has been reported that areas such as Kleinmond and Betty's Bay are experiencing slightly elevated baboon activity in and around the urban area as a result of the fires, so residents really will need to ensure baboons do not become habituated to easy food gained in trash.

Increased baboon populations in South Africa are proving to be a menace in cities such as Cape Town.
For many residents, the easiest way to deal with the threat is by shooting the intruders.
But conservation organization, Baboon Matters, is of a different opinion. They say little changes could go a long way to improve the situation… ... See MoreSee Less

Fundraising for baboons….
The biggest, single challenges facing small non-profit organisations is that of ongoing funding. Typically the small NPO’s work in very specific fields and are so busy “doing” that fund-raising Is often a frantic appeal for help when cash flow is dire.
Baboon Matters is a typical case study of small (tiny!!) NPO’s struggling to secure funds to keep doing the important work we undertake.
Our work is focused in a “difficult” area for funding as we advocate for one of the most persecuted and vilified species; baboons are deemed to be of “least concern” in environmental conservation and it is accepted practice to use lethal methods of management to simply “get rid” of “problematic” baboons.
Against odds such as these we would need a team comprising lawyers, educators, outreach trainers and marketing gurus who could help change the laws and perceptions besetting baboons; it would be beyond wonderful if we could have such a team working to protect our baboons! but at Baboon Matters it is currently just me…
I have been working on baboon related issues since 1990 and in this time have had the rare privilege of being one of the small percentage of people who loves her work…well, rather, I love the baboons who provide continual joy, pathos and every range of emotion.
But as much as drive and determination can carry me through almost continual obstacles and negativity, commitment does not put fuel in the vehicle or pay the telephone bill or provide a salary.
We were blessed in 2014 when Joan Wrench left a bequest to cover our work, and our small team really did Joan proud, but we admit that our lack of success in fundraising has seen our team diminish and our outreach decline.
In 2018 I set a “blue sky” budget – detailing the small team needed to fufill training requests, provide visual and educational material, provide input and articles on the many baboon related issues – and a vehicle.
We have secured less than one fifth of the required budget.
I cashed in a personal retirement policy to get a small vehicle so that we can at least get to the places where our help has been requested or where there are baboons in need – but if there is dealership prepared to donate a sturdy vehicle capable of traversing farm roads – that would be amazing! ( I have sent requests to ALL the vehicle companies in SA – so far no luck at all)
But we are not giving up! Instead we are offering you, our support base of nearly 45 000, a suite of really easy ways that you can make small, appreciated contributions to Baboon Matters. Here’s what YOU can do to help Baboon Matters help baboons.
